Extreme Engineering

Offshore, high-load and high-difficulty builds — projects where conditions leave no margin for error.

Extreme & Specialist Engineering Integration

When conventional methods fall short, we redefine feasibility — from design and structure through to construction.

Genuinely difficult projects are rarely a matter of simply building the drawings.

When the site is unusual, the form breaks convention, spans are vast, or the environment is constrained — high altitude, deep excavation, water, hillside, complex MEP or highly customised materials — the work is no longer construction alone. It becomes the integration of structure, safety, materials, methods, sequence and risk control.

We provide high-end architectural design, specialist structural engineering and extreme engineering integration — from feasibility and design development through to execution and site management, coordinating architecture, structure, MEP, materials and specialist trades so demanding ideas can actually be built.

What is Extreme Engineering?

Extreme engineering, as we define it, is not about danger or scale. It describes work that standard construction methods cannot directly solve — requiring cross-disciplinary integration, specialist methods, precise calculation and a high level of construction management.

Such projects typically involve one or more of the following:

  • Unconventional architectural form
  • Long-span or cantilevered structures
  • High-altitude or unusual-height construction
  • Deep excavation and underground works
  • Hillside and steep-gradient sites
  • Marine, coastal or highly corrosive environments
  • Complex ground conditions
  • Oversized component or equipment lifting
  • Irregular steelwork and special structures
  • High-precision equipment installation
  • Special and composite material engineering
  • Highly complex MEP integration
  • Reinforcement and structural transformation of existing buildings
  • Difficult renovation of premises that remain in operation
  • Projects conventional contracting cannot readily deliver
Every extreme project demands that we rethink how it will be built.

What We Can Take On

01|Specialist Structural Engineering

For large volumes, sculptural forms and proportions beyond convention, the structure often is the architecture.

We integrate structural engineers and specialist teams to plan long-span structures, cantilevers, irregular steelwork, special roofs, space trusses, complex curved geometry, tall atria and the structural demands arising from unusual building form.

A design must not only stand — it must be calculable, manufacturable and buildable.

02|Complex Steel Structure

Hotels, malls, corporate headquarters, pavilions, art buildings and large public spaces frequently require non-standard steel systems:

  • Irregular steelwork
  • Large trusses
  • Curved framing systems
  • Long-span roofs
  • Large entrance canopies
  • Skybridges
  • Cantilevered platforms
  • Special entrance structures
  • Large art-installation structures

From structural analysis, connection design and component segmentation to fabrication, lifting and assembly, construction method must be considered during design.

03|High-Rise & High-Altitude Engineering

The challenge of working at height is not height alone. Wind, lifting, platforms, material handling, safe circulation, sequencing and site control all affect the outcome.

We integrate high-level steelwork, equipment, façades, specialist curtain walling, maintenance access systems, large signage, art installations and specialist MEP.

Sequence and risk assessment are established before work begins, reducing what cannot be controlled on site.

04|Deep Excavation & Underground Engineering

Underground work is among the least forgiving stages of any building.

Deep basements, specialist retaining systems, tight boundaries, groundwater and complex ground conditions all demand more rigorous assessment and management. We coordinate the relevant specialists for underground space, foundations, retention, excavation, drainage, waterproofing and structure.

05|Mountain & Difficult Site Engineering

Sometimes the hardest part of a project is the site itself — hillsides, steep gradients, tight plots, restricted access, sites plant cannot easily reach, difficult geology or remote locations.

These projects require early thinking about access roads, plant delivery, material transport, temporary works, drainage, foundations, structure and sequence.

We start from the conditions of the site, rather than solving them once construction has begun.

06|Coastal & Harsh Environment Engineering

Coastal, island, high-salinity, high-humidity and extreme-climate environments place greater demands on metals, concrete, equipment and external materials.

Environmental factors inform design and specification: corrosion protection, weathering, waterproofing, drainage, fixing methods, material life and future maintenance.

Truly high-end engineering is not only beautiful at handover — it holds its quality years later.

07|Large-Scale Lifting & Installation

Large equipment, steelwork, art installations, glass and specialist components often cannot be installed by conventional means. Planning must establish:

  • Component weight
  • Segmentation strategy
  • Transport routes
  • Lifting positions
  • Crane configuration
  • Lifting sequence
  • Temporary fixing
  • Structural loading
  • Site safety control

Every lift becomes a designed engineering procedure rather than an on-the-day judgement.

08|Building Reinforcement & Structural Transformation

Renovating an existing building is sometimes harder than building new, because the team must resolve structural limits, floor-height constraints, service clashes, loading, existing equipment, continuous operation and the interface between old and new.

Depending on the project, this includes:

  • Structural reinforcement
  • Slab strengthening
  • New openings
  • Load reinforcement for heavy equipment
  • Spatial-structural reconfiguration
  • Change of building use
  • Renovation of malls, hotels, offices and large commercial spaces

The value of the existing building is retained while new possibilities are established.

09|Architectural Art & Landmark Engineering

When art becomes part of the architecture rather than decoration applied to it, the engineering must be redesigned too.

Large public art, hotel installations, mall atrium pieces, corporate landmarks, special entrances, kinetic works, light art and technology-driven art may involve structure, MEP, control systems, lighting, equipment, materials and long-term maintenance.

We introduce engineering thinking from the concept stage, so artistic ambition and engineering safety hold together.

What Matters Most Is Not Whether We Dare

It is knowing where the risk lies.

We do not promise that anything is possible. For specialist work, we place greater weight on early assessment. Before construction begins, we carry out:

01|Feasibility Study

Confirming whether site, design, structure, regulation, equipment and construction conditions are viable.

02|Engineering Integration

Coordinating architecture, interiors, structure, MEP, materials, equipment and trades to resolve interfaces early.

03|Construction Planning

In difficult projects, the construction sequence is itself part of the design.

04|Risk Assessment

Establishing risk management across environment, structure, plant, personnel, materials and critical operations.

05|Mock-up & Technical Review

Key junctions, special materials and complex methods can be verified through samples, mock-ups or technical review.

06|Quality Control

Staged inspection from material and fabrication through site work to finished surfaces.

07|Professional Supervision

Specialist teams coordinate construction and programme, keeping design and site information aligned.

Why High-End Projects Need Design and Engineering Together

The real problem in specialist work is rarely that the technique does not exist. It is that the question — how exactly is this built? — is asked only once design is complete.

A mature high-end project brings engineering thinking in from the earliest stage. How is the form segmented? How is it supported? Where does the equipment sit? How do materials reach the site? How are large components lifted? How is it maintained?

If any one of these is left unconsidered, the cost and time are paid later, during construction. We do not add engineering after design.

Engineering thinking begins with the first drawing.

The Projects We Serve

We are particularly suited to projects demanding high design integration and engineering capability: international hotels, boutique hotels, large malls, corporate headquarters, luxury residences, private clubs, flagship stores, brand centres, art venues, exhibition spaces, special buildings, resorts, public spaces and high-end housing.

Whether new-build or the difficult transformation of an existing building, we work from the conditions of the project itself to establish the right engineering solution.

Making Difficulty Manageable

Extreme engineering is never about risk-taking. Professional engineering turns uncertainty, through design, calculation, simulation, planning and management, into a controlled construction process.

Complex Design. Specialist Engineering. Precise Execution.

From a bold idea to a completed building, our role is to find the route between the two.

SPECIALIST ENGINEERING & EXTREME ENGINEERING

If your project involves unusual form, long spans, difficult construction, a demanding site, large art installations, building transformation or requirements conventional teams cannot deliver, we would be glad to talk. We can join at the earliest stage, assess design and engineering feasibility, then integrate the right specialist teams.

Ambitious design should not stop at the limits of engineering. We make creativity and engineering hold together in the same project.
